These cards support SATA drives only (no SAS support). If you are not worried about RAID performance or need non-RAID hotswapping, Silicon Image controllers provide cost-effective solutions with 4X or eSATA external ports. Highpoint controllers are effective solutions for RAID 0,1, or 10 arrays as well. For Areca and 3ware, you are probably better off with the newer controllers.
