Port Multiplier Enclosures & Accessories
Port multiplier enclosures feature a single eSATA port per 5 drives and work with port-multiplier-capable controllers only. They are a distinctly different setup from our multilane enclosures.
On the plus side, controller and cabling cost is very low. You can have 5 or 10 bays in a tower enclosure as opposed to 4 or 8 with our other solutions. If necessary, it is possible to convert the connection to USB via our eSATA to USB adapters. It's a very economical way to have 12 or 20 drives in a single enclosure.
On the other hand, performance in RAID modes will be limited compared to multilane units. You will be limited to non-caching controllers and you will not be able to use RAID 6.
