SAS RAID Controller Cards
SAS Controllers have all but replaced SATA controllers on the mid and high-end because they are compatible with both high performance SAS hard drives and high capacity SATA drives. SAS controllers also provide for future expansion, as most cards support from 32 to 128 hard drives with the use of SAS Expanders. You also are able to use longer cables with SAS as opposed to the limitations of SATA.
You will find two classes of controller here: those that support RAID 6 (with on-board processors) and those that do not. We highly recommend RAID 6 or RAID 10 for all primary storage over 8TB for reliability reasons. The riskier RAID 5 should be reserved for secondary storage such as backups or smaller volumes.
