SFF-8484

(also known as...)
SFF-8484 Information
This connector (not to be confused with similar but smaller SFF-8482 connectors found on SAS hard drives) is a multilane (4 lanes) SAS data connector found on controller cards and backplanes. It serves the same function as the newer SFF-8087, and is gradually being replaced by the latter. Typical configurations include:
- SFF-8484 on both ends, connecting a controller and a backplane.
- SFF-8484 on one side and SFF-8087 on the other.
- Fan-out setup with an SFF-8484 and the other end terminates in either SFF-8482 or 7-pin SATA connectors.
Note: all SFF-8484 cables (except ones with SFF-8484 on both ends) are directional. It is rare for multilane-to-multilane cables to be directional, but with SFF-8484 to SFF-8087 cables, you must specify which end is meant to plug into the host controller and which end is meant for the backplane.
Also note: some manufacturers (some HP and Supermicro backplanes) seem to use non-standard SFF-8484 to SATA wiring.
Common controllers that use SFF-8484 are Dell Perc 6i and LSI 3442. |
